I would only prescribe these two books because, in our opinion, they are authentic. It is important that the one who writes a book have clarity regarding the text, the teaching, and its purport. What does the Gita teach us?

What is the subject matter or the purpose of the Bhagavad Gita? The purpose of the teaching is to help us discover the fact that we are truly limitless.

Thus, the purpose of the teaching is moka. As a result of the knowledge of the Bhagavad Gita one should become free. Therefore, discovering the fact that I am limitless makes me free. The similarity between the self and Brahman, knowing which one gains liberation, is the subject matter of the Gita. What do we need to do to gain liberation after gaining this knowledge? Nothing; the knowledge is itself the direct means of liberation.

Nothing more need be done. Who is the one qualified to gain this teaching? One who has an intense desire for this knowledge gains it. The subject matter of the Bhagavad Gita is a consistent revealing of the fact that the one who looks upon oneself as a jva or a limited individual is, in fact, limitless. Some preparation of the mind is necessary to be able to see this fact when it is taught.

That is called the purification of the mind. The Bhagavad Gita presents karma-yoga as a means to self-purification in preparing for this knowledge. Jna-yoga is presented as a means to liberation. The Bhagavad Gita is to be studied with clarity regarding its purpose and teaching.

There is great clarity and consistency in Pujya Swamijis treatment of the Bhagavad Gita in unfolding its teachings, or, for that matter, his treatment of any other Vedantic text. There will be no confusion in the mind of the student only if there is clarity and consistency in the teaching 1. Transcribed and edited by Chaya Rajaram and Jayshree Ramakrishnan. The text is an edited transcript of classes given by Swami Dayananda. His thorough, in-depth analysis and unfoldment provides an opportunity to properly understand the Gita. He does far more than clearly reveal the errors in the various alternative views and interpretatiions that have arisen over time, he shows the Gita's true vision of moksha and its means. Duryodhana had wronged him in a number of incidents throughout his life, but he could do nothing.

Now the day has come. When Arjuna looked, he found highly respected people like Drona, his own teacher, Bhishma, his grandfather, and many relatives and acquaintances with whom he had to fight. And what is the use of getting the kingdom back by destroying the people in whose company I would be happy?

Then, Krishna spoke to Arjuna to enthuse him, urging him to do his duty. While caught between the call of duty and his emotions, Arjuna begins to appreciate a fundamental problem, the problem of a human being. That problem takes possession of his mind and he wants to find a solution. Finding a teacher in Lord Krishna, he presents himself to Krishna as a Sisya, a disciple. Arjuna was always a devotee, but not a sisya; he finds himself a sisya on the battlefield. Lord Krishna accepts Arjuna as a disciple and teaches him in the succeeding 17 chapters of the Gita.

Throughout the Gita the yoga-sastra is given; telling one the ways and means to be a mature person free from conflicts, fear, hurt, and guilt. The Gita has all that is to be learned from the four Vedas, which are a vast literature.

Therefore, the Gita has to be studied, and if it is understood well, everything is well understood. In the vision of the Veda, this creation is a manifestation of the Lord. Being the cause, he is all knowledge, especially spiritual knowledge. The first five aspects are thefive elements.

It was this material that was transcribed, edited, and published as the Bhagavadgita Home Study Program.

The reason for bringing it out in this form was that Swamiji wanted even those who did not have the benefit of attending a full time course to gain the benefit of the study of the Bhagavad Gita in the same way. The Bhagavadgita Home Study Program is a very elaborate book of almost crown-size pages. It is now published in four volumes.
